Pressing

This is a common molding method for large-size ceramic grinding media. The main methods are dry pressing (with 3%-7% water or additives in the powder) and isostatic pressing (with less than 3% water or additives in the powder). In industry, a combination of both methods can be adopted.

After evenly mixing the powder and various additives, it is granulated by spray. Next, the granulated powder is added to a metal mold to transform it into balls. After that, the demolded blanks are subjected to cold isostatic pressing to obtain ball blanks. The blanks prepared by this process have high density, and the fired ceramic balls have high density and good quality. It is usually used to produce large, high-quality grinding balls with a diameter greater than 10mm.

Rolling

This method has the advantages of simple production equipment, raw materials, and operation, good sphericity, and easy sintering. The preparation cost is lower, and balls of various sizes within the range of 0.1mm-60mm can be produced as required.

The method of rolling clay segments into balls. The process is as follows: The powder, water, adhesive, plasticizer, lubricant, etc. are mixed into clay in a kneading machine. After aging, it forms plastic clay material. The material is extruded into clay strips in an extruder. Then, it is cut into clay segments with equal length and diameter. Then, they are put into a ball rolling machine to roll into ball blanks.

The direct powder rolling method. The process is simple. First, use a rotating ball machine, which is simple and cheap. Add pre-made ball blank crystal seeds. Then, rotate the machine and spray water mist while adding ceramic powder. The powder continuously sticks to the crystal seeds’ surface and grows. Finally, we obtain the required size of ball blanks.

Dropping

For very small zirconia grinding balls (from 0.05mm to a few tenths of a millimeter), you can use the titration method to form ceramic ball blanks. The zirconia ceramic balls produced by the titration method can be sintered at low temperatures. They have no internal pores and possess high density, strength, toughness, and low wear.
